Term 2

Welcome to term 2

First week back

As I'm sure you are aware, we've finished reading Cosmic and the children absolutely loved it. Even though we've finished reading the book, the children will be producing a newspaper report about the final events of the story. They will explore the features of a newspaper report, take notes like reporters and finally produce a detailed report about the happenings on Shenjian's mission to the Moon.

Our topic this term is the Anglo-Saxons, and the children will be learning to:

  • Identify the dates of the Anglo-Saxon period and any key historical events at the time, then place these on a timeline.
  • Discover how the Anglo-Saxons came to be; who were they? And where did they come from? Why did they leave their home countries? Why did they invade?
  • Consider how the Anglo-Saxons lived and the impact they had on the country and thus our lives.
  • Learn about the Geography of the British Isles - identifying features of the landscape. e.g. rivers, mountains etc.

We will be reading an absolute classic text and one of my all time favourites - Beowulf (As you may know, one of the world's greatest heroic epics). Apart from enjoying a fantastic story, the children will create story maps, explore the rich vocabulary of the poetry, get to grips with the features of Anglo-Saxon poetry, and even write their own heroic epic.

Christmas Play

Year 5 are responsible for performing the play at Christmas play. You are probably aware that we will be presenting our own adaptation of Elf, which the children are really excited about. I will provide provisional dates soon, so you can plan ahead  and hopefully make it to one of the performances.

Towards the end of our busy term the children will be cooking! We haven't decided yet, but is should be something festive and healthy.
