Welcome back to Term 2 in Year 5 - a very special term because of our Christmas production that we will all be working on. This year we will be presenting our version of Tim Burton's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' - a musical about Jack Skellington (King of Halloweentown) who stumbles through a portal to Christmastown and 'tries' to celebrate the holiday by taking over from Santa. It will take a huge amount of teamwork to create this play and we rely on everyone playing their part in this - it creates such a sense of pride and community for the staff and the children, when they finally perform it in front of an audience.
Geography The World 'Across The Pond'
We are really looking forward to a brand new topic this year and have been busy planning engaging lessons to teach the children key skills and knowledge about the world we live in. We will be covering world geography and looking particularly at North America and tornadoes.
Have a look at our Topic Overview (coming soon) in the Key Information/Curriculum area to find out what your child will be learning and how you can further support their learning at home.
This term, we finish our work on Cosmic, which the children have really enjoyed, and they will be writing some poetry inspired by text and a newspaper report to sum up final events.
Afterwards, we move on to Carnival of the Animals a poetry book inspired by the music of Camille Saint-Saens, a French composer. Click this link, if you would like to hear some of his music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2RPKMJmSp0
This is a lovely writing topic, where we look at poetic devices, such as imagery, metaphor and assonance and use them to create our own poems about different animals. Come and read some of our work on a Newsday Tuesday!
